چکیده

Several authors find that development of lung cancer often is associated with a lower dietary intake of retinol (vitamin A) (1,2), suggesting that this vitamin might even possess anti-carcinogenic properties. However, this correlation is much debated. Lopez et al. (3) found no significant differences between retinol concentrations in serum of cancerous and noncancerous patients; others (4, 5) claim that retinol is significantly lower in the serum of patients with lung cancer. Because these different studies each involved a small number of patients and unspecified (and thus perhaps unreliable) determination techniques, we decided to make a comparative study of this particular correlation in a large number of patients and control samples, using a sensitive, specific, and reliable analytical method. We studied 252 consecutive patients: 140 noncancerous control subjects, 70 lung cancer patients, and 42 patients with cancers other than lung cancer. All were men between 40 and 75 years in age, who were smokers. Retinol in serum was measured by a reversed-phase “high-performance” liquid-chromatographic method (6). The paired Student’s t-test was used for statistical comparison. The results (tabulated below) are not significantly different for control subjects and cancerous patients, regardless of where the cancer was located: Retinol concn In serum, mg/L

The Relationship between Vitamin E Plasma and BAL Concentrations, SOD Activity and Ventilatory Support Measures in Critically Ill Patients

Vitamin E is a potent reactive oxygen metabolites (ROM) scavenger. It is a lipid-soluble vitamin and its main function is to protect polyunsaturated fatty acids against oxidative stress. Twenty-five mechanically ventilated Intensive Care Unit (ICU) adult patients participated in a prospective randomized clinical trial receiving either placebo (10 patients) or 3 IM doses (1000 IU each) of vitami...

Vitamins and lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world, and smoking is the major risk factor, accounting for about 90% of the cases. Diet has also been implicated in the development of lung cancer, although the specific nutrients remain to be elucidated. Vitamins with antioxidant activity have received much attention. beta-Carotene, the most efficient provitamin A, was found to be inversely related...

Assessment of lung cancer risk due to indoor radon exposure in inhabitants of the state of Azad Kashmir Pakistan

Background: Several epidemiological studies conducted on underground miner’s show that exposure to elevated levels of radioactive radon gas is expected to increase the risk of lung cancer. Relative risk of lung cancer is almost linear with radon exposure. Elevated concentrations of radon are not only reported within mines but also for closed indoor environment of general public houses....

Association between pre-chemotherapy serum levels of vitamin D and clinicopathologic findings in gastric cancer

Background: To examine serum levels of vitamin D in newly diagnosed gastric cancer (GC) patients compared with normal subjects and any possible association with prognostic variables. Methods: One-hundred subjects (50 GC and 50 controls) were enrolled and serum vitamin D levels were assessed using ELISA. Based on two definitions, vitamin D was classified as a sufficient level (≥30 ng/dL) and op...
